Kathleen Avino, owner of The Interior Design Group by Kathleen (IDG), has a reputation of delivering gorgeous outcomes on schedules that seem nothing short of wizardry. As a project’s designer and general contractor, Avino can precisely manage the complex, puzzle-like schedules inherent with design projects. She attributes success to a team with the appropriate skill sets, availability, and capacity to respect budgets. She calls it her “magic triangle.”
“Service providers on my projects know their precise scope of work and what every other person is doing,” explains Avino. “I’m very specific. I’m on site every day, the budget is assessed every day, and everyone is aware of any change order.”
Whether it’s an electrician, painter, or artisan, Avino knows who is best suited for a job. She’s amassed an expansive talent pool and it’s one she’s vetted and nurtured through years of collaboration. She’s also familiar with materials that might be unique to certain suppliers and knows how to procure those materials at a good price with adequate lead times to ensure timeliness.
HIGH-PERFORMANCE CREATIVITY
To execute her designs, Avino insists on using service providers who elevate their craft to an artisan level. For one project she was tasked with gutting and rebuilding the interior of a dated, 1978 house. The project’s size and magnitude had her coordinating a complex web of providers — architect, engineer, as well as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry teams, and more.
The finished project is stunning. Custom cabinetry, tile work, wall coverings, and a strategic use of heirloom pieces create an eclectic interior with modern details. Matte and high gloss finishes, with touches of floral, balance a generous use of color, and geometric and abstract shapes.
