BUILT TO SUIT
The best thing about building a custom home is living in your idea of perfect.
Many people shy away from the prospect of starting from scratch, but that wasn’t a problem for the owners of this Pittsford home.
They knew where they wanted to live, what they wanted in a home, and the company they would hire to build it.
“They were very specific,” said Marie Kenton of Ketmar Development. “We’re not always that blessed.” She explained that decisive clients make a builder’s job much easier.
The homeowner chalked it up to life experience. “The longer you live, the more you learn where you want drawers and everything else,” the homeowner said.
Location was Paramount
The most important thing for these homeowners was to be near their children and grandchildren. That led them to buy a Ketmar home in Pittsford 10 years ago. But the one-acre lot around the corner, surrounded by Forever Wild state-owned land, offered more privacy and less land to maintain.
The move also provided them an opportunity to transition from a two-story colonial to a ranch. “We wanted to simplify our lifestyle,” the homeowner said. Not to necessarily “downsize,” but to live more comfortably.
A Place for Everything was Key
The semi-open floor plan, 9- to 12-foot ceilings, and coastal color scheme further enhance the light and airy feel of this home. The wood flooring that runs throughout most of the home is Subtle-Scraped Hickory. The kitchen cabinets, by Barzotti Woodworking Ltd., are finished in Cloud White with Cappuccino Paste, and the countertops are Alaskan White granite.
Although considerably smaller than what the homeowners had before, the well thought out use of space, color, lighting, and design make this three-bedroom, four and one-half bathroom home seem much larger than it is.
“We didn’t want to give up the spaciousness,” the homeowner said, referring to their previous homes. Both the dining room and eat-in kitchen can accommodate up to 14 people – perfect for entertaining and family dinners. A den and a project room off the kitchen provide additional living space. There is also a finished basement, with an office and a full bathroom, as well as space for their grandchildren’s toys.
“It’s very convenient living,” the homeowner said. “We were able to design the house from the bottom up and get it where we wanted it.”
