The Influence Of Colour

To be self-confident in design is an art form. It requires the ability to envision, research and resource, craft, and create a well-tailored interior that reflects the personality of the dweller.

The collaboration, often between strangers, is built on a trust that strengthens as you work together to align sensibilities that inspire and mesh. It is an intimate voyage that expands, as you discover ways to translate their life stories in ways they never imagined possible. Developing the right colour palette is a primary element in any design concept since it determines the mood and narrates the visual story for each client.

Our homes work best when their surrounding elements provoke emotions of balance and wellbeing — connections that support and cultivate our daily rituals and routines that embrace our personal lifestyle and aspirations. My clients often struggle with trusting their own sense of design and relationship to colour. That’s why I’m there: to open the door to possibilities and help them develop personalized style streams that reflect their energy and sense of self.

In my approach, every element contributes to “whole life living.” My role is to help clients navigate through the design process with a clear, constant visual objective in mind. Ideas become actions, ensuring that everything works toward the end goal. It’s a journey that continues until things “feel right” and come together harmoniously.

Colour has always been the starting point for my work. it is the motivating energy behind every new project — the spark that ignites a surge of joy and propels me forward at an olympian pace. but experience reminds me that it’s best to take a moment and frame the ideas into a detailed plan that will guide me toward a clear objective, with colour leading the way.

Colour is the emotional thread that weaves its way throughout the design process, influencing the choices along the way. Its power allows it to create a change in tempo and rhythm, change the atmosphere, and bring flow and continuity.

Here are a few helpful pointers for choosing colour:

  1. Imitate before you innovate. Find images and swatches you love, noting colour and placement, from fabrics and patterns to flooring. Create a vision board to externalize your ideas and build your personal style library. Add several descriptive words to describe the mood you’re striving for.

  2. Photograph your space, as is. When you look through the lens and create a framed image, it’s much easier to objectively see what needs refining.

  3. Allow yourself the time to immerse yourself in a project. Developing your own style takes constant practice. Quick fix makeovers rarely leave you feeling gratified.

  4. Ask for help. Working with a professional can take the stress out of design so it can be authentic, enjoyable, and often cathartic.
