A Green Oasis Amidst A Hidden Gem

In the picturesque countryside of Buffalo, New York, nestled behind the walls of a charming house, lies a secret garden that has become the heart of this homeowner’s property.
We recently reconnected with Vern and Kathryn Stein, whose much admired home was featured in our article, “Historically Rich,” which highlights the genius of Frank Lloyd Wright contemporary Ernest Flagg, in our 2018 issue of DesignNY.
Adding the greenhouse was a thoughtful gift from her husband, Vern, who recognized her passion for gardening.
The goal was not just to create a hot house but a haven for herbs throughout the winter, providing a sustainable source of fresh
ingredients. Currently, the greenhouse serves as a sanctuary for a variety of herbs like parsley, sage, chives, tarragon, thyme, rosemary, and oregano, which thrive even in the colder months with the help of grow lights. In the winter, fig trees and olive trees from the garden find refuge in the greenhouse, basking in its warmth as they prepare for the spring bloom.
The homeowner also eagerly anticipates experimenting with more exotic plants, such as orchids. The project’s inspiration came from a deep respect for the existing architecture of the house. The greenhouse was strategically positioned near the interior pool area and the garage, ensuring convenient access throughout the year. During construction, an unexpected discovery of original stones and slates, from the 1925 house’s past, seamlessly integrated the greenhouse with the historic charm of the property.
The addition of greenhouses to homes is becoming a growing trend, with each homeowner having unique visions. Some choose to cultivate extensive vegetable gardens, while others, like this homeowner, seek an indoor-outdoor experience. This greenhouse,
hidden from view at the back of the house, surprises and delights visitors with its timeless design.
