AUSTRALIAN INSPIRATION
When a couple from down under relocated to Rochester they wanted Australian architectural elements in their new home. Pat Moribito, their architect, found a suitable property at Ketmar Development’s Malvern Hills, a custom design-build community.
“When we had our house built we introduced many new design elements that had not been used before,” observe the homeowners. It took creativity and a willingness to do things differently on the part of the architect, developer, and builder, David Miller. It worked. “They made it happen.” say the homeowners.
Defining Modern
The home represents a classic modern style as defined in Australia: a mixture of modern finishes to traditional structures. This is quite different from the minimalism and linear orientations typical of American homes built in the modern style.
The Back Patio
A glorious slide-away glass door opens up a 20-foot outdoor space under the roofline.For this Australian-style back patio, the homeowners met pushback from American vendors who asserted Northeastern winters were too harsh for such a feature. Miller persisted and found a Florida supplier with a double door design making the crystalline wall a reality.
Bathrooms Simplified
The bathroom reflects the Australian approach of no baseboards or crown molding. The homeowners filled the space with intricate, artistic tile work.
Built for Entertaining
The continuity between the back patio, dining room, bar and kitchen reflects the homeowners’ love of entertaining. Bryce & Doyle Craftsmanship handled the kitchen design that consists of the primary kitchen and scullery, another Australian element.
American Style
The living room’s dramatic coffered ceiling adds American flavor to the design. Other woodwork luxuries include detailing above the bar and another Aussie touch: cornices throughout the home.
