2014 Additions to Charley Harper by Motawi

January 13, 2014 – Ann Arbor, MI—Motawi Tileworks has added new designs to its line of art tiles based on the work of wildlife artist Charley Harper.  Designs released last year have been featured in The New York Times and Los Angeles Times holiday gift guides, and the 2014 collection is being met with anticipation. The new tile motifs include a squirrel, owls, and koalas rendered in Harpers enchanting style.

The designs are licensed through New York-based designer Todd Oldham, a longtime admirer of Harper’s colorful minimalism. Oldham saw Motawi as a natural fit for the collaboration. “The tiles share a kinship with Charley’s flat canvases,” said Oldham. “The special techniques that Motawi can execute help bring the works to life in this medium.”

Harper, a self-described practitioner of “minimalist realism,” rendered natural forms into bold, geometric depictions.

“Mr. Harper’s artwork is modern, sophisticated, and utterly charming,” says Nawal Motawi, founder and artistic director of Motawi Tileworks. “It is a great delight to be working with his designs.”

“I truly love everything Charley made,” continues Oldham, “so yes I adore the new tiles! Motawi has been doing a fantastic job representing Charley’s vision and we are so grateful!”
