You can’t help but notice it. The historic, brick building. Eye-catching garden patios. Creative storefronts. This is Rochester’s Central Avenue Design District; the go-to spot for design professionals and the layperson looking for home and garden inspiration and downtown experience. Here’s what you’ll find:
Designers Library
For more than 25 years, Designers Library has served design industry professionals as a premier “to the trade” showroom featuring fabrics, furnishings, accessories, lighting, hardware, window treatments, kitchen cabinets flooring, area rugs, and more. With its 7,500-square-foot showroom featuring 60,000 hanging fabric and book samples, it is the largest trade showroom in the tristate (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut) area.
Vignettes give professionals a sense of what can be accomplished and there are spaces to accommodate client presentations. “The assortment of products and services helps the decision-making process for professionals,” says Brian Coutu, Designers Library Associate.
DL Home & Garden
DL Home & Garden, one of two sister retail stores to Designers Library, is open to everyone. As the first downtown furniture store in Rochester in over 20 years, it gives urban and suburban dwellers a much needed
destination to shop for distinctive, well-made furniture, lighting, accessories, and gifts. Three different outdoor patios demonstrate how outdoor spaces can enhance your home. Housed in a historic building, it’s an environment curated for an enriching experience. Owners, Brian Coutu and Bob Breissinger (owner of Designers Library), along with staff members professionally trained in design, collectively provide more than 65 years of diverse experience in the design field.
City Living Essentials
City Living Essentials, also owned by Coutu and Breissinger, caters to an urban-minded population and the distinct aesthetic that accompanies those who embrace a metropolitan lifestyle. The interior asserts a more industrial, loft-like feel and the furniture is both purposeful and relaxed. Like DL Home & Garden, City Living Essentials has patio spaces showcasing outdoor accents such as furniture and pottery.
Central Avenue Design District Experience
In addition to the design stores, the district is home to Smith+Associates Architects and the Urban League of Rochester (a civic, community-minded organization). The historic Genesee Brewhouse and eclectic St. Paul Quarter are a stone’s throw away for a tasty meal overlooking Rochester’s Upper Falls, or for a city experience.
